The Flagstaff AT Chapter of Philanthropic Education Organization (PEO) recently awarded scholarships to two local students to help fund their education.
Ariel Aslan of Flagstaff High School (FHS) was awarded a $2,500 STAR Scholarship and Joelyn Ajay Mensah of Northern Arizona University (NAU) was awarded an International Peace Scholarship (IPS). will cover her next year’s expenses.
PEO is an organization dedicated to supporting women through education. The Flagstaff AT chapter started in 1962 and the PEO started nationally in his 1869. As of April 2022, the organization has given her over $398 million in grants, scholarships, prizes and loans to her 119,000 women.

“Our main purpose is to provide scholarships, awards and grants to help young women get an education,” said chapter president Bren Hershey. It’s about helping people achieve great things in life and achieve their dreams,” he added.
Established in 2009 and 1949, respectively, the STAR Scholarship and the International Peace Scholarship recognize “women who excel in leadership, academics, extracurricular activities, community service, and potential for future success.” Both help these women get post-secondary education in the United States or Canada. STAR is a senior high school student, and IPS is an international scholarship student.
A 2023 graduate of FHS, Aslan attended AP Academy, the National Honors Society, and was the drum major in the school’s marching band. Her scholarship announcement describes her as “an environmental activist, actress, musician and soon-to-be-published author.”
She plans to enroll in Arizona State University’s Bullet Honors College in the fall, majoring in biological sciences.
Agiei Mensah holds a Ph.D. Students studying applied physics and materials science at NAU. After graduating from her NAU in 2026, she hopes to return to her native Ghana as a Lecturer/Professor at the Winneba College of Education.
