The first phase of the Schultz Creek watershed restoration project began Monday. The watershed restoration project is part of efforts to minimize the effects of severe flooding and erosion following last summer’s pipeline fires. After the wildfire season ended, the city’s downstream infrastructure was overwhelmed by massive flooding. Coconino County Flood Control District Manager Lucinda Andreani said the restoration project would be game-changing. During construction, an area approximately 800m from the Chimney Trail will be closed to vehicles, but the trail will remain open for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Those in nearby areas should beware of active workers operating heavy equipment. The first phase of construction is expected to last four to six weeks, and the second phase he is due to start at the end of 2023. More information on the watershed restoration project can be found on his website for the Coconino County Flood Management District.
