Phoenix and Maricopa County parks fire ban starts May 1

Phoenix – Both the Phoenix and Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Departments will implement annual fire bans on parks and mountain reserves starting next month.

The ban comes into effect on May 1st and runs until September 30th, according to the city of Phoenix.

In cooperation with the Phoenix Fire Department, smoking and charcoal fires will be prohibited due to extreme fire risks in low humidity, high temperatures, dry vegetation and windy spring conditions. The ban does not apply to Flatland Parks.

The Phoenix Parks and Mountain Jam list applies fire bans.

  • Camelback Mountain
  • Deem Hills Recreation Area
  • Lookout Mountain
  • Papago Park
  • Phoenix Mountains Park and Recreation Area
  • Phoenix Mountain Reserve
  • Phoenix Sonoran Reserve
  • North Mountain Park
  • Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Area
  • South Mountain Park/Preserve

For a list of Maricopa County Regional Parks that also take part in the fire ban, please see Their website.

Phoenix’s desert parks and reserves will allow propane and gas grills to be used in designated picnic areas. Smoking outside of enclosed vehicles and fireworks is prohibited.

Anyone driving near or near a park or reserve must dispose of smoking materials in the ashtray of the car.

Residents living near the reserve must remove dry shrubs, brushes and grass and trim dry tree branches within 10 feet of the facility. Maintaining the area around the house allows you to create a buffer zone from the fire.

Residents should also check the irrigation lines, pool backflush hoses, and prevent water from entering the reserve. External water sources can cause thick vegetation growth, which increases the risk of fire.
