arizona daily star

A Pima County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man who came toward the officer while giving a sworn statement, according to the sheriff's department.

The Pima County Sheriff's Office explained in a news release Sunday:

Deputies were dispatched to the 4800 block of South Palo Verde Saturday around 10 p.m. A 911 caller reported a man screaming and brandishing a sword outside a hotel room.

As the senators attempted to communicate with him, the man drew his sword from its scabbard and advanced towards them.

The deputy fired his department-issued handgun, hitting the man. Deputies administered first aid until City Fire Department personnel arrived. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other information has been released.

The Pima Regional Major Incident Team has been activated to handle the criminal investigation of this incident. The Tucson Police Department is the lead investigating agency in the deputy-involved shooting. The Pima County Sheriff's Office plans to conduct another investigation to determine if any policy violations occurred. As is standard practice, all findings will be forwarded to the Pima County Prosecutor's Office.
