Plenty to do in the Gila Valley this weekend

SAFFORD — Get ready for another busy weekend.

Things kick off at 7am and run until noon on Friday when Brant Woods will host a community mural event on the south wall of Austin’s Auto Advantage in Safford.

Members of the public are invited to help Woods and other artists paint nine different murals on the walls.

“Anyone can come, especially small children,” Woods said. “Spray the walls for the little ones. He has paint and stencils ready so the kids can build walls and feel like, ‘Hey, I did something.'”

The Saturday Community Mural Event runs from 7am to 3pm.

Artists who joined Woods in completing the mural were Harley Overton, AJ Wakefield, and Tiffany of Colorbrush Co. Additionally, Latey and Julia from Brilly Co. have already submitted their finished designs.

A community yard sale will be held next Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Safford from 8am to 11am. The sale runs from 8am to 11am on Saturdays, with all proceeds going to a neighbor’s farm and pantry.

At noon on Friday, the GFWC Women’s Club in Safford will host a presentation by Deanna Moeller on the club’s history. Moeller said she is secretary of the Graham County Historical Society.

The Women’s Club of Safford has a long history of serving the community, including opening the first public library in the area.

Finally, starting at 6pm on Friday, Jett’s Friday Night Lights Flag Football and BBQ event will be held at Eastern Arizona College. Featuring burgers provided by Carter’s Custom Cuts, proceeds from the event will go to #saveaskyler scholarships for local youth who are making a difference in their communities who plan to attend EAC.

In addition to community mural events and community yard sales that benefit neighbors’ farms and pantries, Saturday will host the second Pima Fire Fest car show sponsored by 19 Double X.

The show line-up for all classes begins at 8am and the show starts at Pima High School at 9am. Prizes will be awarded to the top 20 vehicles and all proceeds will go to the Pima Volunteer Fire Dept., which is raising funds to build a new fire station.
