Police Arrest Man Who Allegedly Shot Hundreds Of Rounds, Killing 80 Farm Animals

A Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team arrested a man on California's Pacific coast after he allegedly used a variety of firearms to slaughter about 80 livestock over a period of about three hours, according to a statement released on Tuesday.

According to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office (MCSO), the suspect, Vicente Joseph Arroyo, 39, of Salinas, killed “approximately 80 animals, including miniature horses, goats, rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens, ducks and other birds.” Alleged“Some of the animals survived but were taken in by the SPCA and euthanized due to the severity of their injuries.”

The incident happened near Avery Lane, a secondary road that connects to Paradise Road in Prunedale. KSBW Action News 8 Reported.

According to the department, MCSO received reports of multiple shots fired around 3:25 a.m. Tuesday. When officers arrived on scene, gunfire was still continuing, leading to a shelter-in-place order.

“I thought it was just a neighbor scaring off the coyotes. I heard the second shot and thought the same thing. It's not that uncommon around here.” Jason Maynard said “And then right after that, I heard this buzzing sound for about 15 seconds. And at that point, I knew something was wrong.” (Related: Police say they found 200 mutilated roosters with knives stuck in them in major cockfighting bust)

MCSO said darkness and dense vegetation made it difficult to pinpoint the location of the shooting, but with the help of drones acquired from the Seaside Fire Department and Gonzales Police Department, MSCO's SWAT team found the shooter in “what appeared to be a wrecked vehicle” in the vineyard.

MCSO allegedly recovered “multiple long rifles, shotguns and handguns, including illegal assault weapons.” Law enforcement also found numerous loaded and empty magazines, according to authorities.

Arroyo turned himself in and was arrested after police approached him in an armored vehicle, according to MCSO. He was charged with intentional and negligent discharge of a firearm, animal cruelty, unlawful possession of an assault weapon, criminal threats and criminal damage to property, and possession of a firearm as a felon, the department said.

Arroyo was booked into the Monterey County Jail with bail set at $50,000.

Police said no one was injured in the incident, KSBW reported.
