Police Chase Ends in Explosion as Elderly Suspect Uses Blowtorch to Light His Car on Fire

The fast Arizona police chase ended with a violent explosion when 70-year-old suspect James Crespo used a blot torch to light propane.

Fast tracking Arizona The 70-year-old suspect erupted in Inferno on Wednesday when he used a blot torch to ignite a propane tank in the car, police said.

Authorities began chasing James Crespo around 4:15pm after Yavapai County Sheriff’s Deputies and Prescott Police Department tried to arrest him on a felony warrant. Officers believed he was armed as he had previously threatened to blow up people, including law enforcement.

Crespo refused to stop and began his pursuit. Officers deployed stopsticks to slow him down, but instead of surrendering, he grabbed a watt torch and began releasing propane from inside the car as he continued driving, the sheriff’s office reported .

When police put him in the box, officers plunged into Crespo’s car, causing a massive explosion. The flames engulfed his vehicle as multiple propane tanks continued to explode.

“Some other tanks continued to explode and the fire began to spread,” the sheriff’s office said. KPHO-TV. “Deputies have begun using verbal de-escalation techniques to get suspects to crave at the edge of the flames.”

Burned badly, Crespo was raw from the wreckage, clutching his torch and propane tank. Officers arrested him and airlifted him to Phoenix Hospital.

The fire spread to the aide’s cruiser and nearby facilities, but officers and bystanders were not injured.

“The great teamwork between YCSO and Prescott PD is because law enforcement and members of the public are in control of extremely dangerous situations without injuries,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

In addition to existing felony warrants, Crespo is currently facing multiple charges related to pursuits.
