An attempted traffic stop by law enforcement officers ended in tragedy after a suspect with multiple civil traffic violations was killed in a head-on collision south of Lake Havasu City Monday afternoon.
Shortly after 1 p.m., a police officer reportedly observed a 2019 Chevrolet Camaro traveling at a high rate of speed in the area of South Acoma Boulevard and Demaret Drive. Police said the driver of the Camaro fled from officers at the time and was not pursued.
Police said officers encountered the vehicle again near the intersection of Sweetwater Avenue and South McCulloch Boulevard, where the driver of the Camaro allegedly committed several other traffic violations. Police attempted to stop the driver again, and the driver fled from the officers.
The driver of the Camaro reportedly led police on a low-speed pursuit north on Sweetwater Street, then onto Oro Grande Boulevard and south on State Route 95.
Police said the driver of the Camaro veered left of the center line of the highway shortly after passing the intersection of North McCulloch Boulevard and State Route 95. The Camaro collided with a northbound recreational vehicle that was towing a second vehicle at the time.
The driver of the Camaro died at the scene from his injuries, and the passenger in the RV was taken to Havasu Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said the identity of the driver of the Camaro will not be released pending notification of next of kin.
