Santa Cruz County— Santa Cruz County officials announced this week that they have discovered a mosquito species known to carry dengue, chikungunya, Zika and yellow fever in Watsonville.
These diseases are not currently found in California, and Aedes aegypti found near East Lake Avenue and Holohan Road do not carry them.
It is the first time the species has been found in the county, officials said, assessing the extent of the infestation and planning to “aggressively target problem areas” to prevent its spread. The county said in a press release.
These viruses are not currently found in California, but Aedes aegypti can carry dengue, chikungunya, Zika and yellow fever.
Aedes aegypti is common in the southeastern United States and some urban areas in Arizona. They are found in the counties of Costa, Sacramento, and Merced. It is considered an aggressive mosquito that bites easily at any time.
They are small, about a quarter inch, and black and white.
“Our goal is to control and eliminate this mosquito population,” said Vector Control Manager Amanda Poulsen. “We are doing everything we can to keep this mosquito from becoming established in our community.”
Authorities have expanded surveillance activities and placed various traps for adult mosquitoes and mosquito eggs in areas where Aedes aegypti were found.
The county’s message to the public is that even small amounts can hide eggs, so everyone can help keep mosquito populations at bay by reducing or eliminating standing water. . This includes trays under potted plants in addition to bird baths and feeders.
“It’s important that residents look around their property and dump even the smallest amount of standing water,” the county said.
Residents can protect themselves by using repellents containing ingredients such as DEET, picaridin, lemon eucalyptus oil, and IR3535.
You can also wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks, and shoes when mosquitoes are most active.
Residents who are bitten by mosquitoes during the day should report it immediately to Santa Cruz County Mosquito and Vector Control. agdept.com Also 454.2590.
