Quentin Tarantino appeared on Bill Maher's “Club Random” on Sunday and shared his thoughts on the “Lust” shooting.
Tarantino shared his thoughts on the shooting on the set of Lust involving Alec Baldwin and the late cinematographer Halina Hutchins, during a discussion of Maher's Club Random. PodcastsTarantino has offered a nuanced view of responsibility for the incident, and also claims that Baldwin bears some of the blame for what happened.
“How can you blame him? Either you think he shot that cinematographer on purpose, or you think he didn't shoot him on purpose. And if he didn't shoot him on purpose, it's all a bunch of bullshit. Am I wrong?” Maher asked the director.
“No, I think it's fair to say that in this situation, the guy handling the gun, and the person handling the firearm, is 90 percent responsible for everything that goes with that gun,” Tarantino explained, “but the actor is 10 percent responsible.” (Related: A filmmaker is making a documentary about the set of 'Lust' and is apparently trying to capture Alec Baldwin's every move.)
Tarantino stressed the importance of actors personally reviewing the safety of the weapons they handle on set: “It's a gun. You're a partner in the responsibility to some degree… They show it to you, and if there's a procedure that needs to be gone through, you go through it. It's done with an abundance of caution,” he continued.

It was previously reported that First Judicial District Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer dismissed the case against Baldwin. NBC NewsJudge Sommer ruled that the prosecution had suppressed evidence and therefore the case could not stand.
In a Santa Fe, New Mexico, courtroom, Baldwin became visibly emotional and broke down in tears when Judge Sommer agreed with Baldwin's defense and said the withholding of evidence constituted prosecutorial misconduct. Meanwhile, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, a rust-prevention manufacturer, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for shooting and killing cinematographer Hutchins.
