Rain showers hitting Yuma – KYMA

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – Rain has fallen in the desert southwest.

The Yuma Fire Department is reminding local residents to stay safe on wet roads.

“We want to avoid accidents as much as possible, so please put safety first and on rainy days, slow down, maintain a safe following distance, and follow the vehicle in front of you,” Yuma Fire Department Public Information Officer Sgt. David Padilla explained.

The first week of February brings constant rain to the desert southwest.

A winter visitor from Canada said he was in control.

Kevin Bilous, who visited in the winter, said, “I'm used to driving in the snow, so rain is much easier than snow.''

Arizonans, on the other hand, are a different story.

“There's still a running joke that Arizonans don't know how to drive in the rain. Thankfully, we rarely get heavy rain here, but it does cause a lot of water, including on the highways. It’s piling up,” Padilla said.

Kevin said that although it's dark, he's looking forward to seeing the Yuma sun shine in the near future.

“Well, it's a little wet, but it's not the end of the world. It's going to be sunny tomorrow, so everything will be fine,” Kevin said.

If you have an umbrella and raincoat, now is the time to take them out of the closet and remember to stay safe outdoors.
