CELLS, Ariz. – The death of Raymond Mattia, a Tohono Odham tribesman, has been ruled a homicide by the Pima County coroner.
An investigation is ongoing, but the coroner’s office said Mattia died of nine gunshot wounds and the cause of death was homicide.
An autopsy and toxicology report was released to the public yesterday.
Body camera footage of the incident was also released by the federal Office of Professional Responsibility.
According to the Tohono O’Dum Nation Secretariat, the information contained in the report and body camera footage is “raw and disturbing.”
The coroner’s office said Mattia’s toxicology report found methamphetamine, the methamphetamine metabolite amphetamine, ethanol, and free oxycodone.
“We must not prejudge the situation and continue to allow law enforcement agencies to conduct fact-finding,” said a news release from the Tohono O’Dum Nation Secretariat.
“Our hearts and prayers are with Raymond Mattia’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time. I will continue.”
The Tohono Odham Police Department Criminal Investigation Division, the FBI, and the Office of Customs and Border Protection Professional Responsibility continue to investigate further.
Once the investigation is complete, it will be submitted to the US Attorney’s Office for final review of investigator and police officer conduct.
