R&B Star Reveals Reason His Mom Made Him Pretend To Be Special Needs As A Child

R&B star Tyrese Gibson has admitted that he pretended to be a disabled child so his mother could receive Social Security benefits.

The famous singer and “Fast and Furious” actor told King Gilley and co-host Wallo what he did to earn extra funds for his family. He revealed that his mother, Priscilla Murray Gibson, hatched a plan to help cover some of the family's growing expenses. “Mommy had us go to the Social Security building and play dumb,” Gibson said. “Seven hundred and eighty dollars, government cheap as hell,” he declared, as laughter erupted.

“That was my first acting job,” Gibson joked, while Wallo called Priscilla his “first director.”

“Why are you laughing so hard? My mom asked me out!” he said. “I've probably never said anything like this in my life. My mom's dead now, so you can't arrest her!”

Once the laughter died down, Gibson began to share the details behind the story.

“I was about 8 years old and my mom told me what we were going to do, and she said, 'You go into this courthouse and if everyone does this, you'll get $760 a month and your mom can spend it,'” Gibson said.

“I'm here, we're in this favela, I'm working, I'm trying to keep this going for all of us,” he said, recalling his mother's words.(Related article: Colin Farrell launches foundation to help people with same neurological disorder as his son)

“Your mom has two sisters and a brother, so if we all do this, your mom gets this much money,” he recalled his mother saying.
