Democrat Colorado Sen. Michael Bennett opposed California Gov. Gavin Newsom Sunday and acknowledged the party’s brand issues, but denounced states like California, New York and their “educated elite.”
Newsam It appeared On “real-time with Bill Maher” on Friday evening, he said his party’s brand was “toxic,” adding that Democrats “talking” voters. In “Meet the Press,” host Kristen Welker pushed Newsom’s comments on the senators and asked the California governor if he agreed to the party’s brand image.
“I agree that the Democratic brands really have problems,” Bennett said. “It’s a brand associated with New York and California, with respect to my colleagues from California, and it’s associated with the educated elites of this country, no longer related to the workers of this country.”
During the 2024 campaign of former President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, Democrats struggled to gain traction among the working class. Important issues such as the economy, inflation and borders made Democrats unable to connect as the Biden-Harris administration saw record highs on key voter concerns. Bennett goes on to say that Trump’s Trickle Down Economics is good news for the party as it says, “to recreate tax cuts for the wealthiest people in the United States and pay it by paying it by stealing medical care from Americans.”
“But Democrats should come back under these circumstances with a rather good debate about why they are better than Donald Trump and why they can offer a set of economic policies.
“If Democrats show up with imagination, I think we’re not only doing better, but the Americans that Americans do,” Bennett said.
The debate over condemning the loss of the Democrats in November was a continuing debate among party members. Some have called on voters to brand and messaging, while others have warned about pushing for party leftist policies and not resonating with voters in the ballot box.
On March 3, Senate Democrats blocked laws that prohibit trans athletes from participating in sports for girls and women. The Democratic push to block the laws of Republican Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville, despite about eight Americans, including Democratic voters opposed to biological men participating in women’s sports.
In a CNN/SSRS poll released on March 16, more than 30% of survey respondents were unable to name Democratic leaders who believe they “reflect the party’s best.”
