Recap: Monsoon storms in the Valley, July 27-28

Arizona, USA — The West Valley was awakened by showers as a storm swept across the valley on Thursday morning. Severe storms occurred in areas such as Scottsdale and He Ahwatukee.

By 1pm, the woman was rescued after heavy rains closed the road at Apache Junction and washed away cars.

Flood watch will be in place for most of the state through Friday due to heavy downpours associated with thunderstorms. Severe downpours with thunderstorms are possible later this week as the strong monsoon pattern continues.

Flash floods will continue to be a major threat to the High Country communities around Arizona, especially those near the burn scars.

The intensity of the storm is expected to abate early next week. Each afternoon will see isolated thunderstorms instead of widespread action.

Heading into your Friday, the morning will start with very patchy rains around the state, but be aware that storms will quickly set in as the afternoon approaches.

9 pm: Flash flood warning is in effect until 12:30 AM at Quartzsite

8:30 p.m.: The latest radar shows thunderstorms moving south through the Quartzsite, with mostly localized urban and rural flash floods, gusts and lightning, including I-10 at the Quartzsite.

6:50 p.m.: A flash flood warning has been issued for central Coconino County, north of the San Francisco Peaks.

6:25 p.m.: A storm is brewing west of Phoenix.

5:50 p.m.: Flash flood warnings are in effect for Seba Dalkai, Tees Toe, Cedar Springs, Dilcon, Castle Butte, Hopi Reservation and Navajo Reservation.

5:00 p.m.: Today’s high was a “cool” 92 degrees!

3:40 PM: More heavy rain is likely over the next few hours at Apache Junction.

3:30 PM: Chatan where light rain continues

3:10 PM: Flash flood warnings have been issued for Show Low, Wagon Wheel, other parts of Navajo County, and parts of Gila, Yavapai, and Coconino counties.

2:20 p.m. A flash flood warning is in effect for Miami until 4pm.

2:15 p.m. Closer to Apache Junction: Route 88 is closed in both directions just northeast of Apache Junction due to flooding from mileposts 201 to 205.

1:40 p.m.: A flash flood warning has been issued at Apache Junction after several hours of heavy rain.

1:30 PM: A strong storm is moving into the camp and Cave Creek area.

1:15 PM: Officers from the Apache Junction Police Department helped a woman who was swept away by her car.

1:02 PM: The city of Apache Junction says there are road closures due to flooding.

11:00 a.m.- a flash flood alarm Effective until 3:00 PM in areas near Superior as storm activity increases in the afternoon.

10:30 am: Outlaw Hills west of Wickenburg already has more than 2 inches of rain. Maricopa County Flood Control DistrictMore than an inch of rain fell near Carefree and McDowell Mountain Regional Park.

8:30 am: Flood advisories issued for North Scottsdale are no longer in effect.

8:02 AM: The storm turned into scattered showers as it moved through central Phoenix, with rainfall dropping to two-tenths of an inch per hour.

7:48 AM: Flood advisory issued on I-10 and Loop 303
West Valley is no longer active.

6:33 am: North Scottsdale was placed under a flood advisory due to rain at a rate of up to 1.5 inches per hour.

6:00: Rain continued to fall at an inch per hour pace as the storm swept overhead in Phoenix. Officials advise that morning commutes may require extra driving time.

5:00 AM: A flood advisory has been issued along I-10 and Loop 303 in the West Valley as the rain continues and moves east toward the Phoenix area.

4:15 AM: Nearly an inch of rain fell per hour in the West Valley early Thursday morning, creating ponds in the roads.

8:05 PM: Showers and thunderstorms continue to dissipate across the state.

7:45 PM: “Cool” weather isn’t as uncommon as you might think.

6:50 p.m.: Storms and heavy rain are moving to Payson from the southeast.

5:10 p.m.: A severe storm is hitting the Grove area.Heavy rain warning issued until 5:15 p.m.

5:00 p.m.: Severe thunderstorm warnings are in effect for Grove, Miami, Cutter, and the rest of the state.

4:50 PM: Today’s high temperature in Phoenix was 8 degrees cooler than normal!

4:40 PM: Flash flood warnings have been issued for Snowflake and Taylor.

4:30 PM: Flash flood warning in place for parts of Coconino County

3:42 PM: A flash flood warning is in effect until 6:15 PM affecting areas west of Kingman.

3:30 PM: A train of showers moving west into Gila County. Orphaned activities elsewhere may pop up.

3:12 PM: US 180 in Flagstaff has reopened.

3:03 PM: NWS Flagstaff has issued a flash flood warning in effect until 6:00 p.m. for parts of Coconino County, including Bitter Springs and Tanner Wash Slot Canyon.

2:43 p.m.: A storm hits the eastern Arizona High Country. Expected to migrate northeast of the valley.

2:40 p.m.: SR 88, northeast of Apache Junction, is closed due to flooding.

2:30 PM: Radar updates as a series of thunderstorms sweep south and east of Gila County.

2:17 pm – US 180 in Flagstaff is closed due to flooding, ADOT said.

2:15 p.m. – NWS Flagstaff has issued a flash flood warning for parts of Coconino County, including Schultz Pass, until 5:15 pm.

2:05 pm – Reviewed the difference between Advisories, Watches and Warnings.

1:40 p.m. – NWS Flagstaff announced a flash flood warning for the Uminchu area until 4:45pm.

1:20 p.m. – NWS Phoenix issued a flash flood warning for Carefree and Fountain Hills areas until 4:15 p.m.

12:50 pm – NWS Phoenix has issued a flash flood warning for the south portion of Anthem in Maricopa County around Interstate 17.Warning valid until 3:30pm

12:30 pm – If you hit a wet road, slow down and keep your distance from other cars.

12:15 pm – NWS Flagstaff has issued a flash flood warning for parts of Coconino County, including Mount Elden Estates and Sunnyside.

Alert valid until 3pm

12:05 pm – The City of Flagstaff has announced the establishment of shelters in the Mount Elden estate area.

If you’re outdoors, look for elevated ground.

12:00~ A flash flood warning is in effect for parts of Coconino County until 12:45 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

11:15 am – NWS Flagstaff has issued a Regional Flood Advisory for parts of Maricopa and Yavapai Counties.Alert is active until 2:15pm

8:25 am – Update from 12News Meteorologist Krystle Henderson:

  • Phoenix low/high: 83/98
  • At this time, much of Arizona remains on flood watch until Friday morning.
  • Possible daily monsoon storms next week
  • Temperatures will be below normal, but will be very muggy

7:22 am – Flash flood warnings remain in effect for parts of Yavapai and Coconino counties. The region includes Ashfork, Kaibab He Estate, and Seligman.

7:00 am – Some areas southeast of the valley are already experiencing heavy rainfall. There are currently no flood warnings declared for the area.
