Phoenix (3TV/CBS 5/AP) — A widespread winter storm in northern Arizona that brought record snowfall to Flagstaff over the weekend continues into Tuesday night. Parts of northern Arizona will likely see more remnants of the low-pressure storm system, with snow levels dropping to about 4,000 feet and a winter storm warning in effect by 11 p.m. Tuesday. ADOT reports multiple road closures due to bad weather (Last update 21:45):
- Westbound I-40 near Winona (milepost 210)
- SR 64 is closed between MP 241 and 268 near the Grand Canyon.
Arizona meteorologist April Warnecke predicts that the next system will likely be dry in the Valley, but flagstaff could see a few more inches of snow. A storm system will move into northern Arizona from Thursday night through Friday morning, and cooler-than-normal temperatures are expected over the weekend.
Flagstaff was just shy of 15 inches of snow on Sunday, breaking the previous daily snow record of about 9 inches set in 1978. In northern Arizona, about 17 inches fell over the weekend over the weekend. Amid the storm, the Flagstaff Unified School District preemptively canceled classes on Tuesday. Coconino Community College and Northern Arizona University have also canceled classes at his campus in Flagstaff.
The snow has also affected the collection of trash and recycling for Flagstaff residents. All trash and recycling collections for Tuesday have been cancelled, but trash collection is scheduled to resume Wednesday morning. However, homeowners should expect delays in pick-up schedules due to heavy snow. All recycling and bulk trash collection will be suspended for the rest of the week, but will resume next week.
