Ohio’s Republican Gov. Mike DeWine signed a bill Wednesday that requires schools to notify parents about their child’s gender confusion.
of law Requires all schools in the state to adopt a policy requiring parents to be notified of any changes in their child, including changes in mental, emotional, or physical health. The bill’s text also requires parental consent before a child can receive medical services through the school. The bill declares that parents have a “fundamental right to make decisions about the upbringing, education and care” of their children, and encourages parents to be more involved in their children’s education.
According to the bill, schools would notify parents at the beginning of each school year about health services provided at or in collaboration with the agency, and parents would be able to opt out of any of the services. It is said that you must do so.
Schools must also ensure that sexual content is “age-appropriate” and legally allow parents to opt their children out of such lessons. School authorities are prohibited from encouraging students to withhold information from their parents.

DeWine’s move differs from states such as California, where Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom will ban schools from enacting policies requiring parental notification in such cases in July 2024. passed a bill to do so. The law has since faced several lawsuits from parents who say the impact on their children is “potentially devastating.” (Related: Blue state judge defends Democratic AG, rules schools can hide gender identity from parents)
In another effort to protect children, Ohio’s governor passed a law in November that prohibits schools from allowing men in women’s spaces such as restrooms and locker rooms.
