Reid State’s name change progresses, and complete community college status is close.

Lead State Technical College has obtained final state approval to change its name to Reid State Community College. This change gets the institution one step closer to completing the transition, although the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) is yet to make its final decision in December.

The Alabama Community College System initially approved the name change back in July. The Alabama Board of Higher Education is set to confirm its next approval phase on Friday, September 12th.

Since its founding in 1963, Reid State has primarily functioned as a technical college for the South Alabama region. It was among the last technical institutions within the Alabama Community College System to begin converting to community college status.

This name change is expected to broaden the college’s initiatives, not just academically but also through expanding athletic programs, workforce development, and community-focused activities to cater to local industry needs.

“This marks a transformative time for our college, our students, and the community at large,” stated Dr. Coretta Boykin, the president of Reid State. “Transitioning to a community college allows us to enhance our academic offerings, provide more opportunities for student-athletes, and create better pathways for students aiming to pursue their education at four-year institutions. We appreciate the support from the Alabama Community College Systems Board of Directors, Prime Minister Jimmy H. Baker, and all involved parties in this process.”

At present, Reid State is offering a mix of relocatable courses and non-transferable programs aimed at preparing graduates for immediate entry into the workforce.

Beginning in January 2026, the college plans to introduce transferable Associate of Arts (AA) and Associate of Science (AS) degrees under its new name. These programs await final approval from SACSCOC and aim to align Reid State’s offerings with other community colleges and four-year universities throughout Alabama.

Reid State officials indicated that they will host an information session to update the community about the accreditation process and the forthcoming degree programs.
