Congresswoman Lee Halsey didn't originally have a desire to run for office, but being a leader at heart, she saw a positive need in her community and decided to respond to it. .
Her desire to champion community leadership that supports families raising children led her to win the District 15 seat in the Alabama House of Representatives and to be selected as the freshman leader of the House Republican Caucus.
With a “stand up and do something” attitude, Halsey was first elected to the Helena City Council in 2008. After she realized that herself and many of her family members were struggling with the same challenges, she decided to take a stand by saying: To contribute. If you can do something better, step up and do it. ” So she did.
While serving on the city council, Halsey remained active in the community as a local business owner. CrossFit Alabaster was born out of a passion for health, but it also provided Halsey with an opportunity to grow as a leader and mentor. Her 12 years of experience in the male-dominated fitness industry laid the foundation for Halsey to be as successful in state-level politics as she is today.
Halsey, owner of CrossFit Alabaster, uses her aptitude for health to motivate her to stay fit no matter what life throws at her. Regarding her beginnings in CrossFit, Halsey says: “This is a business and a huge community. I love helping others think about how they can grow and succeed in things, and that comes through here at work and in the gym. ”
Ultimately, her goal is to “help people get to a healthy place and stay there.” It's a value that goes far beyond just physical strength. Because it's about quality of life, Halsey enjoys “being part of the path for people to earn it.”
Throughout her career in two male-dominated industries, Halsey found Alabama to be a place of respect. She said, “God has given us the ability to move through space and be blessed in a space where you might be an unusual person. But I had nothing but complete respect.”
Faith plays a big role in her regimen for staying prepared as a leader. Through her prayers, Halsey always seeks the right wisdom to serve others well. ” She focuses on the Bible as a template for loving and serving others. Halsey keeps hope in her heart as she prayerfully and carefully honors those she serves.
For all but your typical politician, sitting down for lunch or coffee is Halsey's preferred method of meeting the perceived needs of her constituents. As a representative of both rural and urban residents, Halsey says, “My goal is to reach a common understanding.” She feels it's important to “take the time to listen” because the needs of each nation are so different. Be willing to sit down and have conversations with people to learn and grow. Some of these conversations resulted in fun and unique relationships. ”
As a transparent public servant, Ms. Halsey explains her positions, votes, and decisions, and speaks to sources at a time when “the information that people are getting from so many different sources is not always accurate.” We welcome the opportunity to provide information from you.
Her approach to leadership as a woman in politics comes from staying true to herself and her beliefs.
Halsey says: “Men and women are wired differently, but I value both roles very much. We are meant to complement each other in every space. You'll be voting on different issues, but it's valuable to have representation of both men and women from different perspectives in tackling issues.”
But she truly believes that “women should have a seat at the table, too.” Halsey championed a woman's sense of understanding her own unique experience, saying, “As wives, mothers, friends, and businesswomen, it is intuitive for us to nurture, care for, and provide.” states.
Halsey has worked on a variety of projects, but cites her first bill as her proudest accomplishment.
“My first bill was the Individuals with Invisible Disabilities Sensitivity Act, which would provide law enforcement with training on how to respond and de-escalate situations when necessary.”
Building on her work as a City Council member, Halsey first worked with Culture City to begin the process with local law enforcement. After the successful training, Mayor Helena continued the momentum and all city employees were trained. Now, Halsey's own personal experience with children with disabilities is advocating for progress at the state level.
For Halsey, when asked about what's next for the district, she said the answer is more layered than just one. “There are so many diverse concerns that I would think of several things, not an all-encompassing one. Always at the forefront is the infrastructure, getting to and from work, and ultimately the family. It's about finding the resources to improve the infrastructure that will support our quality of life until we return to normal.”
For Halsey, it's all about family.
“Preserving your family's core values for a variety of people is unique and fun. You can work in fields such as education, transportation, health care, and economic development.”
She has many passions, so a seat in the Alabama House of Representatives is a perfect fit. As a Woman of Influence in 2024, Halsey will move the needle for families in Alabama and beyond, continue to be the best advocate for her children, and bring her personal commitment to the work she undertakes. It continues to connect beliefs.
