Rep. Gary Palmer joined a group of Republican lawmakers Thursday to vote against a continuing resolution proposed by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana).
according to washington post, Johnson and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York originally reached a deal for $1.66 trillion in government funding for fiscal year 2024. But Congress is running out of time to pass that particular proposal before federal funding expires on Saturday. As a result, some lawmakers proposed a continuing resolution, which ultimately passed Thursday.
Under the new measure, lawmakers agreed to extend funding through March 1 for four of the 12 annual spending bills. The remaining eight bills have a deadline of February 2nd.
Palmer referenced his vote against the spending bill in a statement Thursday.
“Unfortunately, this CR continues to spend at the same unsustainable levels that it opposed in the past,” he said. “At some point you have to face the reality that you have to cut spending. I'm disappointed that we're still going through CR.
“I will continue to push for prudent spending cuts and prudent fiscal policy,” he said.
The House of Representatives voted in favor of the continuing resolution by a margin of 314-108. Only two Democrats, Reps. Jakes Auchincloss (Massachusetts) and Mike Quigley (Illinois), voted against the bill.
Members of the state's congressional delegation, including Rep. Jerry Kahl (R-Mobile) and Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise), also voted against the bill. Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Haysville), Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Sachs), and Rep. Dale Strong (R-Monrovia) also joined Democratic Rep. Terry Sewell (R-Birmingham) in voting yes. ” cast a vote.
