Recognition for Selma High School Teacher
D-Alabama president Terry Sewell addressed the assembly on Thursday, honoring Selma High School educator Veronica Pitts for her exceptional dedication to her students and her efforts in nurturing future civic leaders and activists.
“Mr. Speaker, let’s take a moment to celebrate Veronica Pitts, a remarkable educator from Selma High School, right in her hometown of Selma, Alabama,” Sewell remarked.
“Each year, only one teacher from across the country is selected for this honor, and I’m thrilled that this year’s recipient hails from Alabama’s seventh congressional district.”
“Pitts embodies the true spirit of an educator and public servant. With her passion for teaching and unwavering commitment to her students, she has devoted her career to instilling the importance of civic participation and community leadership,” he continued.
“Through her engaging lessons, Pitts ensures that her students recognize democracy is not merely a passive activity. It calls for informed, empowered, and active involvement. Her classroom is where they learn not only about government but also about the roles that shape it.”
“Being the daughter of two lifelong educators who spent over 36 years at Selma High School, I’ve witnessed the transformative power of quality education. It’s evident what our students can accomplish with the support of dedicated educators and strong role models.”
“Teachers like Pitts do more than just prepare students for exams; they prepare them for life. They spark curiosity, instill core values, and ignite leadership qualities that carry them far beyond school.”
“Located less than two miles from the historic Edmund Pettus Bridge, it seems only fitting that Selma High School fosters the next generation of civic leaders, activists, and change agents.”
“After all, it was the people from our district who were instrumental in passing the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, showcasing the potential of ordinary Americans committed to the ideals of equality and justice.”
“In Alabama’s seventh congressional district, I encourage my colleagues to join me in applauding Veronica Pitts. We are proud of you, and we appreciate your daily efforts to create opportunities for our students to excel.”
