‘Reparations Math’: 1619 Project Curriculum Has Students Calculating Whether To Pay Slavery Descendants

The 1619 Project Education Network has released a math curriculum that asks students to think about how much to pay the descendants of slaves, Fox News reported Tuesday.

The curriculum analyzes how several industries grew as a result of the slave trade and how these industries contribute to the existing black and white wealth gap. according to Program official site. Students also “examine the historical and financial context” of various reparations proposals in the United States and abroad. Students will follow the resources in the unit to learn how reparations have been paid to communities around the world throughout history, using algebra to evaluate the mathematical models underlying reparation proposals.. The curriculum will also have students compare reparation payment patterns to families of functions such as linear, exponential, and absolute, depending on credit resources. The students will then make a presentation to report their findings and explain whether and why they think compensation should be paid, the webpage explains.

According to the unit documentation, this unit is intended for high school students studying US History, Algebra I, and Algebra II.

According to the webpage, “Reparations Mathematics” was inspired by HR 40, a bill establishing a commission to investigate reparations for the descendants of American slaves.
