Police in West Des Moines, Iowa, on June 26 arrested a fugitive from Wisconsin who had been wanted for 30 years, KCCI8 reported on July 2.

Police allege Hartroad initially gave a false name but eventually revealed his real name, KCCI 8 reported. Police ran the suspect's name in a database and found he had been wanted out of Wisconsin since 1994, the outlet reported. Wisconsin state records show Hartroad was convicted of rape for an incident in 1983. The Wisconsin Department of Corrections said Hartroad served five years of his sentence before escaping and has been on the run since then, the outlet reported.

KCCI 8 reported that Hartroad had been homeless while on the run. Authorities have booked the fugitive into the Polk County Jail to await extradition to Wisconsin. Hartroad, 71, is according to Go to Polk County Jail Records.
In May, a less successful fugitive from China was arrested after evading authorities for 20 years on suspicion of murdering his neighbor. His strategy to avoid attention was to pretend to be a deaf and mute scavenger and to not contact his wife and son. He communicated only with smiles and gestures.
