Missouri authorities were forced into a female student’s home near the University of Missouri (MU) on Wednesday, and allegedly hugged a female sorority member temporarily against her will. The man was arrested and reported that he had been charged.
Jeffrey Wheland, 41, is said to have entered a residence in the Greek town area around 6:51pm. Wheeland then seized several knives from the kitchen and headed to the basement where female sorority members were studying. He is said to have trapped and barricaded himself underground and his students.
Wheeland told law enforcement that he told her he would not harm her, court documents said. The student allegedly told police that he wasn’t hurting her, but he told her he was too afraid of leaving the basement and that he would text her friend to contact the police.
According to the documents, MU police arrested more cases for listening to police calls and listening to police calls. Police said the suspect appears to have a disability during the interview. The Columbia Police Department said in a statement that they confirmed Wheeland to university hospitals, but he fled and went to Greece Town. MU Healthcare said police do not need to stay with patients unless the patient is arrested. The student said he saw people running around in the area saying they were trying to kill him. He is said to have since entered the female student’s house.
“He was probably two feet before me,” student Nell Kupiek told the outlet. “He stopped and looked, and it looked like, ‘They were trying to kill me.’ ”
Kupiek said she got into a friend’s car and they called the police.
“We saw him running up to Tri-Delt’s house and trying to open their doors and stuff, and he kept running down Burnham Avenue, and that’s when I called 911. That’s when I did,” Kupiek added.
“The safety of our campus community remains a top priority,” MU spokesman Christopher Avenue told the outlet via email Wednesday. “Affected students are connected to campus resources.”
Wheeland faces robbery, lure and assault charges and is not held at the Boone County Jail ahead of Monday’s hearing and a preliminary hearing on Feb. 27.
MU police arrested Wheeland in 2019 on suspicion of sexual misconduct and resisted arrest and assault in Greece Town on Komu 8 News Previously reported. Wheeland is said to have exposed his body to a woman and kicked the officer after his arrest.
