A Wisconsin couple has been charged with multiple animal abandonment and theft charges after they allegedly starved nearly 200 goats to death on their farm, reports Wednesday.
Kyle and Stephanie Linthicum were each charged with 20 counts of animal cruelty and failure to feed animals, in addition to known mishandling and theft of carcasses. according to to WKOW.
The Farm Services Agency reported that a number of dead goats were found on the farm where the couple allegedly took them in under an agreement with the property owner. An investigation by the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office found only two goats were alive and both were severely malnourished, the report said.
“If you track the records through the feed companies and others, it’s been a long time since you actually purchased the feed,” Sheriff Reg Gill told WKOW.
Veterinarians called to the scene confirmed prolonged starvation in the animals and reported signs of “no running water for weeks.” The expert also decided to euthanize the two surviving goats because they “did not have an ounce of fat on their bodies,” the newspaper reported. The couple claimed the goat was treated for parasites, parasites and pneumonia years ago. However, the criminal complaint reportedly stated that the animals continued to die even after veterinarians treated them.
The couple are also accused of illegally selling several goats for a profit of more than $37,000. Investigators claim these proceeds were used for personal expenses rather than for farm maintenance. If found guilty, the couple could face prison terms.
“It is highly unusual to see an animal left to starve to death,” the sheriff said, according to KWOW news agency.
