Representative from Senator Kelly’s office visits local head start in Yuma

WACOG’s Head Start Program provides free services to approximately 1,066 at-risk children and their families

YUMA, Arizona (KYMA, KECY) — Representatives from the office of Senator Mark Kelly (D-Arizona) visited the Western Arizona Council of Government (WACOG) Head Start Center in Yuma on Tuesday.

Katherine Phillips, Senator Mark Kelly’s Legislative Assistant, toured the Gwyneth Hamm Early Learning Center.

She met with the center’s staff and interacted with Early Head Start early learners.

WACOG said Phillips was able to learn about the center’s operations and the children enrolled in the program.

She met with WACOG Head Start Director Deb Schlamann to discuss some of the challenges facing the program.

According to WACOG, recently there have been problems with federal funding for the National Head Start organization.

Phillips said Senator Kerry’s office is committed to supporting Head Start funding locally and statewide.
