Representative of the Country’s Most Democratic District Announces Retirement

Pennsylvania’s Dwight Evans to Retire, Not Seek Reelection

Pennsylvania Democrat Dwight Evans announced on Monday that he will not run for reelection in 2026. In a statement, he expressed being “deeply proud” of his achievements during his time in office. Having represented a Philadelphia district since 2016 and served as a lawmaker for 35 years, Evans will complete his current term in Congress.

“Serving the people of Philadelphia has been the honor of my life,” Evans stated. “After some thoughtful reflection over the weekend, I decided it was time to share my decision about reelection. I will continue in good health until the end of my term, which concludes on January 3, 2027.”

This news follows his announcement in May 2024 regarding a mild stroke he had suffered. Notably, his district is the most Democratic in the country, holding a significant advantage according to the Partisan Voting Index (PVI) at D+40. His departure might pave the way for a competitive Democratic primary to fill what is considered a secure seat.

Evans reassured constituents that he plans to fully support his members until his term’s end and facilitate a smooth transition for his successor.

No response has been received yet from his office regarding further inquiries.
