Auburn and Alabama Basketball Stars Return for Next Season
Auburn’s standout guard Tahard Pettiford and LaBaron Philon from Alabama have decided to return to their respective college teams next season after pulling out of the NBA draft process this week.
This is certainly a significant boost for both basketball programs.
Pettiford, who had an impressive freshman season with the Tigers, had declared for the NBA draft but kept his eligibility option open for a potential return. His performance on the court was remarkable, and he seemed to be weighing his options carefully.
On the other side, Alabama’s Philon, another freshman guard, announced on Thursday that he would also withdraw from the draft and continue his journey in Tuscaloosa.
Both players received feedback from NBA scouts, ultimately deciding that another year in college would be more beneficial for their development.

Pettiford wrapped up the season averaging 11.6 points, along with 2.2 rebounds and three assists, showing a good upward trend as the season progressed. He really shone during the NCAA Tournament, notably scoring 16, 23, and 20 points in the first three games before the Tigers faced off against the eventual champions, Florida, in the Final Four.
Philon had a solid season as well, averaging about 10.6 points per game, along with nearly four assists and over three rebounds. It seems like he was also starting to find his rhythm at the end of the season, which is a promising sign for the upcoming year.
It’s interesting to think about how both players could have pursued the NBA after just one year but chose instead to develop their skills further. If they can have another standout season, it’s quite possible we’ll see their names among the top picks in next year’s draft.
