Alabama's 2nd Congressional District election is once again attracting national attention.
Recent reportReuters featured the race as one of 11 House of Representatives elections to watch.
Last year, a three-judge panel selected from maps proposed by a special judge appointed by the judge, and redistricting took place after a ruling that maps approved by the Alabama Legislature did not meet the standards of the Voting Rights Act.
“Democratic former Justice Department official Shomali Figures and first-time Republican Carolyn Dobson won the April 16 primary,” the report said. “The district was created after a federal court ordered Alabama to implement redistricting that would create a second majority-black congressional district, a decision that could provide Democrats with a rare opportunity to win a seat in the conservative Southern state.”

The 2nd District is currently made up of 48.7% of black voting-age residents, and many believe Democrats have a good chance of winning the seat.
Carolyn Dobson won the Republican nomination, defeating former state Sen. Dick Brewbaker (R-Pike Road), and Shomali Figures won the Democratic nomination, defeating state Rep. Anthony Daniels (D-Huntsville).
A poll conducted earlier this month showed Figures receiving 45% of the vote, Dobson slightly ahead with 44%, and 10% undecided.
