The first episode of “Special Ops: Lioness” airs on Sunday and could be the biggest show of 2023.
Taylor Sheridan’s “Special Ops: Lioness” is an absolute thrill from start to finish, and may be the best thing he’s ever done for television. Fans of “Yellowstone” and Sheridan’s other Paramount + shows may have expected a tangle of escapism, black humor and lightheartedness through life’s harrowing beauty, but what you actually receive in “Special Ops: Lioness” defines the type of action Sheridan should be known for.
No spoilers, but the opening scene was the best I’ve seen since Saving Private Ryan, and I thought, ‘No wonder Sheridan needed such a huge budget to bring this movie to life. It’s hard to breathe for the first few minutes, and it doesn’t change after the credits roll.
“Special Ops: Lioness” was much more intense than I expected. In her first 20 minutes she literally gasped 5 times and wanted to vomit multiple times. The film certainly shines a light not only on the horrors of war, but also on the horrors of domestic violence, the importance of the military, and how powerful women can be when we are allowed to thrive. The main cast may be predominantly female, but don’t get me wrong. This is a man’s show. If you’re a guy and for some reason you can’t enjoy Special Ops: Lioness, it’s probably because you don’t feel confident about yourself as a man. It’s embarrassing for you, so wrap it up.
