Rubio’s Evolving Foreign Policy Views
Health and Human Services Director Robert F. Kennedy Jr. remarked in an interview with Tucker Carlson that Secretary of State Marco Rubio has notably shifted his foreign policy perspective. Previously known as a foreign policy hawk, Rubio’s stance has seemingly become more aligned with President Donald Trump as the 2024 election approaches.
Kennedy expressed that he had been critical of Rubio for his previous positions, particularly regarding Turkey. However, he now feels that they share similar views, particularly concerning Ukraine. He commented on Rubio’s comedic presence in the cabinet, stating that he often elicits laughter during meetings, despite Kennedy’s earlier disapproval of Rubio’s hawkish tendencies.
In Kennedy’s view, Rubio has become more consistent with him, especially regarding the belief that the U.S. should refrain from acting as global police. On January 20th, Rubio was confirmed as Trump’s first cabinet candidate for the new term. Historically, he has supported initiatives to promote democracy worldwide.
However, in 2024, Rubio voted against a foreign aid package that included funds for Ukraine while still holding a hawkish position on China and Latin America. He also advocates for a peace agreement in the Ukraine conflict, suggesting that compromises from both sides are necessary to conclude hostilities.
Furthermore, Rubio has emphasized the importance of a robust strategy to address both China’s economic and military challenges during his confirmation hearing.
