John Richard Duffield passed away peacefully at his home on October 21, 2022 after a long illness. he was 92 years old. Known as Richard or Dick, he was born on May 17, 1930 in Elizabeth, New Jersey, the second of his two sons, to Mildred and Stuart his Duffield, and lived in a bedroom in his community of Cranford, New Jersey. While in college, Dick served in the United States Air Force for two years after he spent four years at his ROTC. Most of his time in the Air Force was spent at Marana Air Force Base outside of Tucson, but as an officer he was allowed to live in town and, on a blind date on Valentine’s Day, met his future wife. He led the state delegation to announce Arizona’s vote at the 2016 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Later in life, he noted that delegations bused to the convention center early in the morning and returned to hotels late at night, so they were largely unaware of the historic protests and violence. Though he had a particular passion for medieval history and crime fiction, his interests were vast, delving into topics ranging from the birds of the Southwest to constellations to Bloomsbury his group and more. He also read both the Tucson newspaper and the New York Times from cover to cover each day. Dick loved movies and watched foreign films and box office hits weekly for much of his life.
