Risk of roof collapse following record snowfall in Flagstaff

FLAGSTAFF, Arizona — After a series of record snowfalls in Flagstaff, some locals now have to worry about collapsing roofs. City and county officials are warning homeowners about the problem.

Concerns about the structural integrity of many people living in hard-hit areas have been raised as sidewalks and roofs are covered in snow.

In Coconino County, officials provided photos of the damage caused by the recent snowfall. They encourage people to check their structures for signs of stress.

You should check the following:

  • hanging ceiling tiles
  • Sprinkler system not on track
  • Popping or creaking sounds
  • Severe roof leak
  • even if you cut a tree

City and county leaders have said extreme caution should be used when clearing snow, as icicles can fall and injure someone.

If you are using a snow rake, watch for signs of slipping snow and keep your distance from the eaves.

“City or county residents who have seen any of the above signs, or suspect structural problems due to snow accumulation, should call the City of Flagstaff and Coconino County Joint Information Line at 928-679-8525. You can,” the official said.
