Florida Attorney General Considers Actions Against California Over Illegal Immigrant Case
On Thursday, Florida Attorney General James Usmieyer discussed potential legal actions against California and other political entities regarding Haljinder Singh, an illegal immigrant from India, during an appearance on Fox News’ “Ingraham’s Angle.”
Singh had fled to California but returned to Florida, where he acquired a commercial driver’s license (CDL) despite his immigration status. Laura Ingraham asked Usmieyer about Singh’s current situation in Florida, mentioning ongoing claims filed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
“He’s back in Florida and we’re going to prosecute him to the fullest,” Usmieyer stated. “He’s already been charged with vehicle murder and could face decades in prison. I hope this serves as a cautionary tale for others in similar situations. Your license is not valid here, and we will enforce the law.”
Usmieyer added, “Gavin Newsom is involved with an illegal alien who has harmed others, so we need to hold people accountable. Perhaps it was the company in California that issued this license to someone who doesn’t even speak English.”
DHS is set to officially charge Singh with three counts of vehicle murder on Monday following an incident where three individuals died after making an illegal U-turn under his truck on a state turnpike near Port St. Lucie. The U-turn took place through an “official use only” access point, blocking traffic.
Footage shared online shows Singh and another person attempting the illegal U-turn. After the incident, Singh and another individual flew to Sacramento, leading to an arrest warrant issued for Singh on August 15.
Investigations revealed that Singh illegally crossed into the U.S. through the Mexico border in 2018 and later obtained a CDL in California, according to state highway safety records.
Questions have emerged regarding how Singh managed to gain his CDL, with investigators noting his limited understanding of English and American road signs. Reports indicate that he only answered two out of twelve English proficiency questions correctly and identified just one out of four traffic signs correctly.
The press office of the Democratic governor has responded as DHS criticized Newsom’s state, claiming it “has put American lives at risk.” Singh mentioned to the Daily Caller News Foundation that he had received a “federal government-issued work permit” during Donald Trump’s presidency.
A spokesperson for Newsom argued, “He would have qualified in any state. California was following federal law. The president is misinformed.” In response, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Thursday that all worker visas for commercial truck drivers would be suspended immediately.
