Improvements Enhance Safety and Efficiency at Airports Managed by ADOT
Tusayan – The Grand Canyon National Park Airport, run by the Arizona Department of Transportation, has successfully completed a runway rehabilitation project costing $12 million. This initiative aims to boost safety and operational efficiency.
The project involved resurfacing the airport’s single runway and reconfiguring key taxiway intersections. Additionally, the team updated apron markings and signs to align with current Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards. Conducted over a two-month period, the work was carefully planned to limit disruptions for airport operations, tenants, and travelers.
“This project showcases the strength of our partnership with the FAA and our mutual commitment to providing safe and efficient access to the Grand Canyon,” stated David Leffner, director of Grand Canyon National Park Airport. “Thanks to the team’s dedication and expertise, we are pleased to deliver this project on schedule.”
The funding for this initiative primarily came from an FAA Airport Improvement Program grant, supplemented by state funding. This collaboration highlights Arizona’s dedication to maintaining top-notch aviation infrastructure to enhance the travel experience.
The project team included Fan Construction, along with Mead & Hunt for design and project management, as well as ADOT and FAA staff for contract oversight.
