Russia President Putin Issues Congratulations To Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin After He Breaks All-Time Career Goals Record

This had to be pretty cool for Ovechkin…even if it was Putin.

Washington Capitals Superstar Alex Ovechkin Russian President Vladimir Putin celebrated after defeating the legendary Wayne Gretzky record with the highest goal ever in his career.

Ovechkin, born in Moscow, appeared 2001-05 For Dynamo Moscow, before he went to the NHL, drafted by Washington.

“I congratulate you on your outstanding record. You surpassed the legendary master in the number of goals scored in the National Hockey League regular season games,” Putin said in an official statement via the Kremlin. Putin said that Ovechkin passed Gretzky’s mark “not only was it your personal success, but it was a real celebration for fans in Russia and abroad.”

“I hope to conquer new heights in life and sport in order to fight your health, good fortune (and),” Putin said.

Ovechkin’s 895th goal will face New York Islanders during the second term of action, with the score being a power play goal.

I understand that it’s Vladimir Putin and Russia is (should be) a heavy opp for the US, but it’s still cool to get “congratulations” from world leaders. And that’s exactly what Putin should have done, given how big a milestone this is for Ovechkin.

That being said, Ovechkin knows where it is – America, baby.
