Nick Saban’s Coaching Legacy and Connection with Lane Kiffin
Former Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban has undoubtedly established one of the biggest dynasties in college football history.
One of his most notable accomplishments is the impressive coaching tree he’s cultivated, including names like Billy Napier, Steve Sarkisian, and Mario Cristobal. Saban has mentored numerous current head coaches who began their careers in Tuscaloosa.
Perhaps the most unique example of this connection is Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin. After a challenging stint at USC, Kiffin joined Saban’s staff and was instrumental in modernizing Alabama’s offense, contributing to the program’s continued success before moving on to his own head coaching role.
Saban and Kiffin have often spoken highly of one another. Recently, Saban was featured in an ESPN documentary about Kiffin’s varied coaching journey. He also made an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, expressing admiration for Kiffin’s growth and achievements.
Yet, Saban humorously admitted he didn’t actually watch the documentary, since he experienced Kiffin’s time at Alabama firsthand. “Well, first of all, I didn’t watch the documentary, because I lived there for three years. I think that was enough for me,” he joked, highlighting his respect for Kiffin. “He did an amazing job for us. It’s not easy to adjust to a new environment, but he handled it well.”
He continued, “Kiffin has found success everywhere he’s gone since leaving Alabama. I really wanted to help him grow and ensure he had opportunities for the future.”
Fans of both teams likely enjoy seeing the camaraderie between Kiffin and Saban. Unless the Rebels are facing Alabama, Kiffin seems to always have Saban in his corner.
