The Hutton Foundation is pleased to announce Karla Saffer as the 2023 Hutton Foundation Scholarship Recipient for Yuma County.
Safer graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Her experience includes the operating room, emergency department, and intensive care unit.
She received her Postgraduate Diploma in Diabetes Nursing from Capella University in 2017. She is currently enrolled in a master’s degree program in Chronic Disease Management at Creighton University.
It integrates well with the lifestyle medicine clinic she and other healthcare providers are working to develop at the Ray Clinic.
Most patients deal with not just one diagnosis, but diagnoses such as hypertension, obesity, and tobacco addiction.
“Kara’s degree and lifestyle medicine clinic will help treat the entire patient population,” said a foundation representative. “The Hutton Foundation wishes Carla the very best in both her education and her career as a Yuma County master’s nurse. Congratulations, Carla.”

Jim Hutton had a passion for helping students become nurses. He learned firsthand the importance of quality nursing care.
As a result, I created a foundation to help students pursue their dreams of becoming a nurse. In doing so, Jim left a legacy to the nurses of Kit Carson and Yuma counties.
