Sahuarita School District governing board member resigns

1 seat is currently available Sahuarita Unified School District board after former board member Nicole Warner submitted her resignation.

The Pima County School Superintendent’s Office will begin screening and considering qualified candidates interested in serving in this position.

Under Arizona law, the Steering Committee may also submit up to three names for Pima County School Principal Dustin Williams to consider for appointment to the position.

Community members wishing to be considered for positions must submit their Affidavit of Eligibility and Candidate Questionnaire to the Pima County School Superintendent’s Office by 5:00 p.m. on March 10.

The new candidate will serve from the date of appointment until December 2024. This position will be elected by ballot in November 2024.

New music garden opens on campus

Tankverde Elementary School celebrated the opening of the new Music Garden, an outdoor space on campus where students can perform music.

The addition was made possible by a grant from A for ArizonaTanque Verde Unified School District, a nonprofit that invests funds in schools statewide, said in a news release.

The Music Garden officially opened on February 7, when music teacher Seth Mulzin led the students to play a short melody.

Teachers will now be able to teach their classes in the Music Garden. Spaces and instruments are also available for students to use during their free time during their morning and lunch breaks.

nominate good teachers

The Southern Arizona Chapter of the American Chemical Society is accepting nominations for its annual High School Teacher Award.

The award is intended to recognize, encourage and inspire outstanding high school chemistry teachers in Southern Arizona. A donation of $500 to the teacher and $500 to the school will be awarded to purchase classroom supplies at the winner’s discretion.

Candidates must be actively involved in the teaching of chemistry or chemical science in grades 9-12 for at least half of the time. High school chemistry teachers can be nominated by anyone other than the teacher’s current student or a member of the award selection committee.

Teen is a presidential scholarship candidate

Gregory School graduate James Nepler has been nominated for the 2023 nomination. US Presidential Scholar Programone of the highest honors given to high school graduates.

Scholars are selected on the basis of outstanding academic and artistic achievement, leadership qualities, strong character, and involvement in community and school activities.

The US Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964. Each year, up to 161 alumni are selected for Presidential Scholars.

The public is invited to participate in the Pima County Spelling Bee. Here, the best student spelling players from across the Tucson area compete for a chance at the state competition.

The event will take place on Saturday, February 18th at 10am at 25 W. Calle Concordia, Canyon Del Oro High School. Admission and parking are free.

The winner will participate in the 2023 Arizona State Spelling Bee on March 18th in Phoenix.
