San Luis picks lieutenant to fill in as police chief

YUMA, Arizona (AP) — The bordering city of San Luis has appointed a temporary police chief until a permanent pick is found.

Yuma Sun report Friday, Lieutenant Miguel Alvarez does the job.

Alvarez, 43, has been with the San Luis Police Department for 18 years. He is also a Criminal Justice Lecturer at Western College in Arizona.

He doesn’t deny himself applying for the job.

Chief Richard Jessup, who has been Chief of Police since 2018, is now retired.

The San Luis City Council recently approved an ordinance that forces city administrators to elect a new police chief. Previously, the city council did the hiring.

Mayor Nieves Riedel said the new ordinance is meant to prevent politics from influencing hiring decisions.
