This weekend, Sandlot Maricopa pays tribute to 10-year-old Suhaley “Heidi” Fernandez, who was tragically killed in an accident on State Route 347 on March 31st.
Coaches, parents and members of the community came together for a two-day softball tournament on June 2nd and 3rd at Copper Sky.
In the wake of Heidi’s death, coach Mike Odell and his team felt the need to rally around Heidi’s family.
“We’re a softball community, so it was natural,” O’Dell said. “It was an easy decision.”
Eight youth teams from across Arizona will compete on Saturday with support from Vail, Phoenix, Chandler and Mesa.
And on Sunday, about 60 adults signed up to participate in the adult sandlot.
Attendees can also purchase a raffle, concession stand, food truck and commemorative t-shirt. All funds raised will be donated to the Fernandez family.
Primarily a pitcher and cleanup hitter, Heidi had a diamond-infectious spirit.
“She was a cheerleader,” O’Dell said. “She was always happy, she was always in good spirits, she was always goofy, but she was happy to go to work.”
Heidi’s enduring importance is symbolized by her jersey number #16, which is often carved into the dirt or worn under her teammates’ eyes using eye black.
“She’s always there,” O’Dell said. “The girls won’t let her go.”
They produced cheers and chants of “Heidi hit for Heidi, hit for Heidi” to keep her spirit on the field and in their hearts.
Odell expressed his gratitude and thanked the community, coach Cody and team moms for their unwavering support.
In the future, O’Dell envisions the event growing with plans to include multiple teams and age groups to foster an environment where families can come together and find solace.
