The country of Saudi Arabia is Attracted billions of dollars in investment from big tech companies, is interested in building a cloud computing center in the region.according to ReutersMinister of Communications and Information Technology Abdullah Al-Swah, Leap, is an international technical conference that started today in the country’s capital, Riyadh. Players such as Microsoft and Oracle have invested billions of dollars in the country, with Microsoft over his $2.1 billion and Oracle his $1.5 billion. Chinese tech company Huawei is also reportedly investing $400 million.
As quoted by Reuters, Alswaha told LEAP that “this investment … will strengthen the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s position as the largest digital marketplace in the Middle East and North Africa.” The timeline for these investments is unclear, but Oracle told Reuters the funds will be distributed over several years. Alswaha has lured these companies with government contracts, and although details are scarce, Saudi Arabia is likely to offer the best low-cost real estate to build a cloud computing center in Riyadh. “The investment is part of Saudi Arabia’s planned oil-to-technology transformation, which the country calls Vision 2030,” adds Gizmodo. “This pivot is already underway as Tonomus, Saudi Arabia’s own convergence of architecture, engineering and sustainability subsidiary called NEOM, has made his $1 billion investment in artificial intelligence and the Metaverse.”
One of Neom’s three areas officially announced and underway is The Line, “a rectilinear city with utopian views straight out of a Hollywood movie.” “Composed of two parallel skyscrapers that cut through the desert for 170 kilometers from coast to mountain, The Line will be 200 meters wide and 500 meters high (taller than most towers in the world). A surreal touch is covered on all sides by giant mirrors.”
