SAFORD – Rafe Nelson Elementary School and other schools in the Safford School District were placed on a temporary “soft lockdown” on Tuesday after authorities were involved in the pursuit of an armed individual in the area.

The Safford Police Department and Graham County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on the 800 block on 10th Avenue early Tuesday afternoon, according to a news release. That action led to a foot chase with an armed subject.

The subject was taken into custody, but officers may be in the area to follow up the investigation.

SPD reports that the scene is safe and secure. No other information was immediately available.
