Yuma High School’s criminal mascot is Kurt the Crim.
Yuma, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – Beginning with the 2023-24 school year, the Yuma High School mascot will have a new nickname.
The new nicknamed mascot “Curt the Crim” is named after longtime teacher and coach Curt Weber.
The new names were announced on Friday at the school’s annual spring pep rally.
When the Yuma High School student council learned that Weber was retiring, they unanimously voted to change the mascot’s name, wanting to honor his legacy.
Weber is a member of the Yuma Union High School District (YUHSD) and has worked at Yuma High School for 47 years, 33 years, and Kofa High School.
He has taught government, history, and economics and has coached baseball, football, track and field, and baseball.
“It’s good to look back,” said Weber. “It’s been a good ride and I’ve always tried to get involved. The criminal traditions in this town are incredible…becoming a part of it is just a pleasure.”
“Mr. Weber is a man, a myth, a legend,” said student council adviser Betsy Jacobson. “That mascot was fitting for Curt the Crim.”
YUHSD said the honor came as a surprise to Weber, with friends from Yuma High School’s Palace Jim and Family Center Court joining him.
Weber will retire this spring and will be recognized at YUHSD’s annual retirement and staff awards ceremony.
