Last weekend, five Stratton Eagles competed in regional games at the NJC and are eyeing tickets to the State Wrestling competition at the Ball Arena this weekend. He was the only one out of five who could have been on the podium, and none of them go to Denver.
Joe Sheen, the lone senior on the roster, started his regional journey with a 6th-place finish in the final high school competition, with a fall victory over Enriquez from Burlington in 2:41.
The 175-pounders then lost in the quarter-finals from Limon to Shuwald in 4 minutes and 50 seconds. Sheen won his first two consolation matches at the pin. He stabbed his Creek bass player clear in his 49 seconds, followed by Sedgwick at County/Fleming’s Davis where he scored a 3:43 pinfall. Sean lost in the Consolation semi-finals to Merino’s Cows by his 6-2 decision. He got another shot against Schwald in the fifth-place play-off, but his career ended with an 8-0 major decision.
Huxden Mills (165) was the only other Eagles to pick up a win that wasn’t the result of a goodbye. Mills started the tournament by being pinned by Bundy from Limon at 1:28, bidding a bye to start running in the Consolation Bracket. He beat Bryant of his Christian Dayspring in his 3:52 but lost to Osborne of the Lions in 1:11.
Devon Chambers (120) was pinned by Byers to Wardall in 51 seconds and was given a bye in the consolation bracket before being pinned by Yuma to Perez in 16 seconds.
Luis Arzaga (215) started off with a bye before being pinned by Wells from Yuma at 3:25. His season ended with a pinfall loss to Gilpin County’s Sechler in 2:07.
Stockton Fai (144) also had a first-round bye, dropping at 5:26 after facing Sedgwick County/Fleming’s Bornhoft in the quarterfinals. Fai received another bye in the consolation bracket, but his season was also over as he was pinned by Limon’s car at 3:25.
