SEC and Big Ten form advisory group to address issues in college athletics



College sports, especially college football, are entering a new era of name, image, and likeness (NIL), as well as new NCAA rules regarding the player transfer portal.

The two largest conferences in college athletics are taking steps to address emerging challenges across the sport.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that the Tennessee football program was under investigation by the NCAA for violating NIL rules. Tennessee also responded. The NCAA filed a lawsuit alleging that it “violated antitrust laws.”

Following the news, the latest in a series of issues surrounding the NIL, the two conferences are working together to “play a leadership role in developing solutions for a sustainable future for college sports.”

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey spoke about forming the advisory group.

“The new collegiate athletic environment has cultural and social impacts on student-athletes, institutions, and communities alike. There are no predetermined answers to the myriad questions we face. No. We don't expect to agree on everything, but increasing interaction between meetings will help focus efforts on common-sense solutions,” Sankey said.

The exact role of the Advisory Committee has not yet been determined at this time, other than to serve as an advisory body.
