SEC distributes average of $51.3 million to each of 14 member schools

Southeastern Conference and Commissioner Greg Sankey Thursday's press release has released its revenue for the 2022-23 fiscal year and subsequent distribution to schools, and the numbers are staggering.

The conference total was $741 million, of which $718 million was paid directly by the conference and an additional $23 million was retained by the universities participating in the 2022-23 football bowl games.

The total revenue share will average approximately $51.3 million for each of the 14 member schools. This is up from an average of $49.9 million in 2021-22.

“SEC member universities are proud to support the thousands of student-athletes who participate in a wide range of athletic programs across the league,” Sankey said.

“SEC universities provide a high-level experience for all participants through an impactful and life-changing college experience that includes coaching, training, academic counseling, medical care, mental health support, nutrition, and world-class support in life. We are committed to providing student-athlete skill development and post-qualification medical coverage.”

According to the release, the total distribution consists of “revenues from television contracts, postseason bowl games, the College Football Playoff, the SEC Football Championship Game, the SEC Men's Basketball Tournament, and the NCAA Championship.”

SEC revenues have increased year over year and should increase further in 2024 with the addition of Texas and Oklahoma.

While the pie is growing by dividing it among the current 16 member schools, it will be interesting to see how much the total revenue increases year-on-year with the participation of two major universities.
