The Secret Service shot a man outside the White House shortly after midnight on Sunday, a spokesman said.
“Secret Service officials were involved in the shooting following an armed encounter with someone of interest shortly after midnight on March 9th,” Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in X.
Before the shooting, local police learned of a suicide person who may have been traveling from Indiana to Washington, the press release said. Secret Service members spotted a privately parked car near 17th and F Streets northwest near the Executive Office Building in Eisenhower, and saw people walking nearby match the description.
“As officers approached, individuals wielded firearms and armed conflicts continued, during which time they were fired by staff,” the release said.
The man was taken to a local hospital, and his condition is unknown as of Sunday afternoon. No Secret Service injuries have been reported.

According to Secret Service, the DC Metropolitan Police Department Internal Affairs Division will investigate the incident.
President Donald Trump was not in the White House at the time of the incident. According to New York Post. The President is currently staying at the Mar-A-Lago resort in Florida.
There was another incident in which the Secret Service shot a man near the Capitol during Trump’s first term. The agency said the 51-year-old man approached a member of the Secret Service and notified officers in August 2020 that he had a weapon. “The suspect then turned around and ran aggressively towards the officer, retracting the object from his clothes in a drawing movement. He then leaned into the shooter’s stance as if he was about to fire a weapon. The Secret Service officer drained the weapon that hits an individual with its torso,” the statement read.
The suspect and officers were taken to a local hospital after the shooting.
Trump was in the middle of a press conference at the time of the shooting. He rushed out and stayed in the oval office before law enforcement officials could control the situation. The president then returned to the press conference to deal with the situation.
