Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen on Thursday launched the “Heroes at the Polls” initiative, fulfilling another campaign promise.
“Safe, secure, and transparent elections are the foundation of our constitutional republic. Administering these types of elections is no small responsibility,” Secretary Allen said. “During my campaign, I promised to start a program to recruit veterans to continue their service to our country as poll workers. This is that program. Our veterans have lost their constitutional right to vote over and over again. This makes them uniquely qualified to protect election integrity as voters exercise their constitutional rights.”
Heroes at the Polls encourages veterans to apply for appointment as poll workers and participate in poll worker training conducted by each probate judge in Alabama before each election. After training, they work as poll workers at locations designated by local probate judges.
“Poll workers are critical members of the election administration team. They work hard from sunrise to sunset on Election Day at every polling place in the state. They demonstrate the integrity, patriotism, and strong work ethic that military service requires. This makes veterans ideal candidates for poll worker positions,” said Secretary Allen. “As Secretary of State, I will always support our state's hardworking election workers and ensure they have everything they need to conduct the safest and most secure elections in the country.”
