Sedona City Council votes 6-1 to annex 3,422 acres

In five minutes, Sedona grew about 30%. Rather, it will occur on Thursday, April 24th, when the annexation of 3,422 acres west of the town became effective.

Sedona City Council opposed it on March 25th, with councillor Pete Furman approved the annexation ordinance 6-1 vote.

City Attorney Kurt Christianson called on the council’s attention to “one little unique information that came up during ordinance preparation.”

“All annexed areas are the city’s most zoned, as required by state law. It’s basically the same zoning that the county has. It’s not that restrictive, or anything more, you have to match as much as possible,” Christianson said. “I originally thought all the facilities were RCU-2As in the county, so I thought they were two units of housing. This small section of the Cultural Park is basically one acre instead of two units. Zone per ordinance RS-70.”

“This is not necessarily developed, so there’s a lot to say,” Christianson added.

He also said it is likely that staff will ask for the city’s wastewater treatment plant to be rezoned at some point in the future.

“It’s a bit strange, but it probably drives the city’s restrictions,” Christianson said. “We probably move it, replicate it, put another one or replicate it [State Route] Right near the 89A wastewater treatment plant. ”

There was no public opinion or council comments or discussion before the vote.

The annexation will take effect 30 days after approval of the ordinance, and Christianson said it will be April 24th.
